Gutters: Properties and Standards

Gutters must meet several standards. It should be ensured that the equipment meets these standards as well as the Unified Technical Documents. Gutters are essential elements for the roof. They take care of evacuating the rainwater and thus avoid infiltrations into the building. Constructed of various materials, aluminum, PVC, zinc, composite and more rarely wood, the gutter is either creeping or descending. If the most common form of the gutter is the semicircle, there are moldings, squares or cornices. Regional variants exist, for example, the gutter Lyon with a rounded edge and an additional fold, to increase its rigidity. But your choice of roof drainage system will be guided by a regulatory framework and technical constraints.

Gutters: what the law says

The installation of the gutters is regulated. Article 681 of the Civil Code provides, in fact, that rainwater cannot be discharged on the adjoining land. The owner must ensure that rainwater falls on his parcel or on the public road. But once on the ground, rainwater can flow on the neighboring property. This requires you to install a creeping gutter or a gutter and not a falling gutter, if your construction is on the property line. The creeping gutter also called discreet gutter is placed on the roof or on the cornice. It is fixed by hooks on the frame or on a strip fixed between the rafter and the roof covering (roof doubling strip). The gutter is not a gutter: this roof element designed to collect rainwater is directly incorporated into the shell, leaning against a wall or located below a wall. On the other hand, a hanging gutter is placed on the lower part of the slopes of the roof (at the level of the sewer of the roof).

Gutters: to take into account to choose well

To properly choose the gutter of your home, we must take into account the constraints of the PLU, climatic conditions, the slope and the surface of the roof and finally the style of facade. The Local Urban Plan (PLU) plans urban planning at the municipal or inter-municipal level. It defines the conditions of constructability of the grounds and the aspect of the constructions. This plan may impose a shape and / or material for your gutter. Your town hall is able to inform you. In addition, if your home is located near a historic monument, you must also ask an authorization to the Architects of France before work. The climatic conditions, the slope and the roof surface determine the amount of water to be evacuated. From this quantity the development (DEV) i.e. depends on the width of the sheet metal used to make the gutter, the section, the number and the diameter of the descents? The calculations are complex. Appealing to a professional roofer to properly size your roof drainage system is a security. At the aesthetic level, PVC is the cheapest and also the least aesthetic material. On the other hand, aluminum gutters are available in many colors and can therefore be harmonized with the color of shutters and doors, for example. The copper gutters are very aesthetically pleasing. Zinc gutters remain the classic solution par excellence and are therefore ideally suited to traditional style facades.
